A film revolving around George Santos is in the works at HBO Films, as per a report on The Hollywood Reporter. The rights of The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos, the book written by Mark Chuisano, has been optioned by HBO Films.

The film announcement comes just days after Santos was expelled. He became the first US House Member to be expelled in more than 20 years, and also just the sixth House Member to be removed by his own colleagues, in history.

Mike Makowsky is set to write the script for the upcoming film, while Chuisano will serve as consulting producer. According to the logline, the film tells “the story of a seemingly minor local race that wound up a battle for the soul of Long Island, and unexpectedly carved the path for the world’s most famous (and now disgraced) congressman. The Gatsby-esque journey of a man from nowhere who exploited the system waged war on truth and swindled one of the wealthiest districts in the country to achieve his American Dream.”

Santos, who is known for being a controversial personality, was recently caught in the controversy of filing false campaign statements and using donor money to fund his lavish lifestyle, as per a report issued by the bipartisan House Ethics Committee. He has also been accused of 23 federal charges, including wire fraud and money laundering, which he has pleaded not guilty to.
