Halia Abdel-Meguid will reportedly handle the writing for Netflix’s upcoming series adaptation of Death Note. The project is part of Stranger Things creators Duffer Brothers’ new production company Upside Down. Death Note originally started as a manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The series received an anime adaptation, the first episode premiered on 4 October 2006, the series became a worldwide phenomenon, taking the Japanese animation media to a wider global audience.

The series follows a high school student who chances upon a mysterious notebook, any person’s name you write on the notebook will die within the next few minutes.

Netflix had earlier produced a feature-length adaptation of the series in 2017, which was universally panned by critics and fans alike. Abdel-Meguid has earlier collaborated with the Duffer Brothers under their Upside Down productions. One of the factors that propelled the makers to take her on board is her grasp of Japanese popular culture, she has lived in Japan and can speak fluent Japanese. She had earlier worked on Hulu’s adaptation of the novel The Devil in the White City.

The series will have no connection to Netflix’s 2017 film and will be a fresh new take on the series. The makers are yet to finalise the cast and crew for the project.
