Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa is set to play the iconic Doctor Who in the long-running BBC series. He will be the first Black actor to play the iconic character.

Gatwa will takeover from Jodie Whittaker, who was the first actress to play the Doctor.

The Rwanda-born Scottish actor expressed his elation, and said, "This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my utmost to do the same."

Talking about the casting choice, showrunner Russell T Davies said, "Sometimes talent walks through the door and it's so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars."

Gatwa will make his debut as the Time Lord in 2023 and Whittaker will sign off in a special episode to be aired later this year.
