Alex Essoe and Daniel Zovatto join Russell Crowe's The Pope's Exorcist

CE Features

Russell Crowe's The Pope's Exorcist has two new co-stars joining him. The Oscar-winning actor will be joined by Alex Essoe of Midnight Mass fame and Daniel Zovatto (Station Eleven) in the film helmed by Julius Avery.

The Pope’s Exorcist's plot is based on real-life events written about in Father Gabriele Amorth’s memoirs, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories. Throughout his decades-long career in the religious world, Father Amorth performed thousands of exorcisms and ended up with stories that he wanted to document before his death. Sadly, the priest passed away in 2016, but not before he completed his desired task.

He was great at his job, that he became the official exorcist for the diocese of Rome and was given the title of the Vatican’s Chief Exorcist. Crowe will be stepping into the role of the demon dispelling member of the church, with no news as to who Essoe and Zovatto will be playing.

Screen Gems production house has acquired father Amorth’s life rights as well as the rights to his memoirs, and it will be directed by Ángel Gómez. The recent draft of the screenplay has been penned by Evan Spiliotopoulos with revisions written by Chuck Maclean.
