A biopic on Mary Shelley, the author behind the original Frankenstein novel, is in development.

Titled Mary's Monster, the film will follow the author's struggle to complete her 1818 gothic masterpiece. "Terrified of giving voice to the darkness of her subconscious mind, Mary Shelley locks into a dangerous battle with her own ‘inner monster’ as she struggles to write her seminal science fiction novel, ‘Frankenstein," reads the official logline.

Written by Deborah Baxtrom, the feature is set to be directed by Farren Blackburn.

Frankenstein is widely considered as the world's first sci-fi novel, leading to countless film, television, and theatrical adaptations. According to reports, Shelley came up with the novel at the age of 19 during a stay by Lake Geneva with her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and the poet Lord Byron, where they kept themselves entertained with ghost stories.

This isn't the first time that Shelley's life has been adapted into a film. 2017's Mary Shelley feature focused on Shelley's relationship with her husband. Elle Fanning played Shelley, while Douglas Booth played her husband Percy Bysshe.

Heather Greenwood and Leo Pearlman will produce Mary’s Monster for Fulwell 73, alongside Rose Ganguzza, Max Born, Damon Lane and Jake Alden-Falconer for Rose Pictures.
