Amazon's upcoming animated movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will release on April 12, 2024.

Lord of the Rings is widely considered one of the most popular film franchises, earning over  $5.8 billion. The last film, 2014's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies grossed $940 million worldwide. Notably, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won 11 Oscars including best picture, tying the record for a single movie.

The War of the Rohirrim is a totally separate movie from Amazon Prime Video’s Middle-earth series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The upcoming anime film will explore and expand the untold story behind the fortress of Helm’s Deep, delving into the life and bloodsoaked times of one of Middle-earth’s most legendary figures: the mighty King of Rohan – Helm Hammerhand.

Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the film has a final draft written by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou based on a script from Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. The creative team also includes Oscar winner Richard Taylor and esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe.

Joseph Chou's Sola Animation studio is producing the film. Philippa Boyens, who was part of the Oscar-winning screenwriting team for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, is executive producing the film.
