Legendary Italian actor Monica Vitti, best known internationally for starring in Michelangelo Antonioni’s trilogy L’Avventura, La Notte and L’Eclisse, has passed away. She was 90. 

"Goodbye Monica Vitti, goodbye queen of Italian cinema. Today is a truly sad day, we have lost a great artist and a great Italian," Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said in a statement. While the reason for the actor's demise is yet to be revealed, it's reported that she died of complications from Alzheimer's disease. 

The actor, also known for films like Red Desert, The Girl with the Pistol and Modesty Blaise, made her last appearance in Italian TV movie, Ma tu mi vuoi bene? before retiring. She's survived by her husband.
