Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, the British filmmaker who helmed the 2002 sports comedy drama Bend It Like Beckham, is set to direct an original musical film for Disney, which will feature a princess from Indian history.

Gurinder will write the film along with Paul Mayeda Berges, while the former will also direct and produce the film. It is to be noted that Paul has earlier worked with Gurinder in the 2017 film Viceroy's House. Not much about the plot of the upcoming film is revealed at this point, but the film will be supervised by President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production Seam Bailey.

The film will be produced by Gurinder along with Lindy Goldstein under Lindy Goldstein Production banner.

Gurinder is a two-time BAFTA nominee for Bend It Like Beckham and her first film Bhaji on the Beach. Bend It Like Beckham went on to become one of the highest grossing British backed and distributed films at the UK box office. It also earned Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture, a BAFTA Award nomination for Best British Film, a European Film Academy nomination for Best Film, and a Writers Guild of America nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
