Matthew Lopez to direct Red, White & Royal Blue adaptation

Tony award-winner Matthew Lopez is set to make his directorial debut with the adaptation of Casey McQuiston's bestselling novel Red, White & Royal Blue. The film is a production of Amazon Studios.

The book, which is an LGBTQ+ romance drama, is about a star-crossed power couple — the Latine character of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the president of the United States, and his relationship with Prince Henry, grandson of the Queen of England.

Berlanti/Schechter Films' Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will be producing the film with Michael McGrath serving as the executive producer.

Matthew Lopez, who recently became the first Latine playwright to win the Tony Award for his play The Inheritance, is also currently scripting the remake of the 1992 film The Bodyguard starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner  He's also writing a feature adaptation of the novel Leading Men.
