Filmmaker Taika Watiti will direct a movie adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius' graphic novel The Incal.

Waititi will also write the screenplay along with Jemaine Clement and Peter Warren.

Created in the 1970s, The Incal became the highest-selling sci-fi graphic novel in history. The story centers on a private investigator named John Difool, who comes across a mystical artefact called the Incal, which is an object of great power coveted by many factions across the galaxy. As Difool learns of the Incal's powers and purpose, he teams with a ragtag crew on a mission to save the universe.

Notably, the graphic novel was also the foundation of the Jodoverse, which encompasses bestselling comic book series such as The Metabarons and Megalex.

The film will be produced by Humanoids, the publisher of The Incal and other related comic books, with Primer Entertainment.
