Hollywood filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee passes away

Canadian writer, director and producer Jean-Marc Vallee passed away earlier today. The filmmaker is best known for titles like Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club, and Sharp Objects. He was 58. The cause of death is yet to be known.

Speaking about the loss, producing partner Nathan Ross said in a statement, “Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy. Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed. He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.”

Vallee was supposed to make his next HBO project, another suspenseful mini-series based on a popular book, Sharp Little Objects. He was also set to direct another series for HBO, Gorilla and the Bird, based on a memoir by Zack McDermott.

Vallée is survived by his two sons, Alex and Émile, and three siblingsm Marie-Josée Vallée, Stéphane Tousignant and Gérald Vallée.
