Anthony Mackie has officially closed the deal to star as the lead in Marvel Studios' Captain America 4.

Towards the end of Disney Plus' Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Mackie's character Sam Wilson a.k.a The Falcon assumed the title of Captain America. Now, he will officially wield the shield on the big screen for the first time.

It remains unclear if Sebastian Stan's character Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier will return for the film.

Captain America 4 will be written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige will produce the film, which does not have a director attached as of yet.

Notably, the title of Captain America was played by Chris Evans through his Steve Rogers character in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016), as well as four Avengers movies. At the end of 2019's Avengers: Endgame, Rogers retired and handed the shield to Mackie's Sam Wilson, whose story is mapped in Falcon and The Winter Soldier along with Stan's Bucky Barnes/ Winter Soldier.
