Filmmaker Sudha Kongara, who recently won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay Category for Soorarai Pottru, put out a statement thanking note, expressing her gratitude for the illustrious win.

In a note posted on Tuesday, Sudha said that her journey with Soorarai Pottru started with her father passing away. “The last image of my father that I carry is of him gesturing to me from his bed to come to him as I stood in the doorway. I went back and added this as a scene in Soorarai Pottru. As film makers I guess most of us are finally just greedy voyeurs looking for those moments in our lives to put into our films,” the director added.

The filmmaker, while thanking her father for the moments taken from their lives to put in the film, also regretted his absence. Sudha also extended her gratitude to her mentor and filmmaker Mani Ratman, Suriya, her producers, the film crew, and Captain Gopinath on whose life the film is based on.

“There are no better words than Mahakavi Bharathiyar’s that I can say to each and every one of you at this moment- Soorarai Pottru,” Sudha wrote.

After extending her thanks to her assistant directors, media and audience, Sudha said that she watched Soorarai Pottru in theatres after two years and witnessed “every cheer, every scream and every whistle” which gave her a “closure”.

Meanwhile, Sudha is currently remaking Soorarai Pottru in Hindi with Akshay Kumar in the lead. She also is making a film for Hombale Films. The director is also set to team up with Suriya for another project.
