Susan Sarandon has extended her solidarity to Indian farmers protesting the three new farm laws. The Academy Award-winner (Thelma & Louise, Dead Man Walking) is the latest international personality to tweet in support of the farmers’ protest in India.

“Standing in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India. Read about who they are and why they’re protesting below,” Susan wrote, sharing a news piece on the protests.

So far, international pop star Rihanna, climate activist Greta Thunberg, and celebrities Jay Sean, Lilly Singh and others have spoken in support of the protests, as did American lawyer and Kamala Harris’ niece Meena Harris. British actor Jameela Jamil (The Good Place) also spoke about receiving rape and death threats after talking about the protests.

In an Instagram post, Jameela wrote, “I've 'repeatedly' spoken about the farmers in India over the past few months and what is happening there at the moment, but each time I do I am met with death and rape threats. So while you are pressuring me in my DMs please keep in mind that I am a human being who has some limitations as to what I can handle."

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had earlier released a statement on foreign celebrities tweeting about the issue.

“The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible," the ministry had said.

The statement was followed by unity tweets by Indian celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Sachin Tendulkar, and others.
