Disney Plus' Willow series to have a 2022 release

Disney Plus' original series produced by Lucasfilms, Willow, is set for release in 2022. The series is based on the 1988 fantasy film of the same name, which tells the story of Willow, a young farmer who journeys to protect an orphaned baby from an evil queen.

The original Willow was helmed by Ron Howard (Solo: A Star Wars StoryA Beautiful Mind), and had Warwick Davis playing the titular role. In October 2020, Lucasfilm confirmed that Willow will return as a TV series for Disney Plus, with Davis returning to play Willow Ufgood.

The series also stars Ellie Bamber, Cailee Spaeny, and Erin Kellyman in lead roles.

During Disney's Investors Day, it was announced that the series will be available to stream on Disney Plus in 2022.

Howard and Bob Dolman, the original director and writer, respectively, are the producers of the series, along with director John M Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, Now You See Me 2). Chu will reportedly also direct the first episode.

The showrunner will be Star Wars veteran Jonathan Kasdan, who co-wrote Solo: A Star Wars Story with his father Lawrence Kasdan, the co-writer of three prior Star Wars movies.
