Filmmaker James Gunn loves horror angle of Brightburn

Filmmaker James Gunn says he loves Brightburn as it offers a new take on the superhero genre. "I love this film because it is an entirely new take on the superhero genre," Gunn said in a statement.

Gunn has backed Brightburn with his production company, Troll Court Entertainment. Sony Pictures Entertainment India will release the film in the country on May 24.

"It is something we have never seen before. It's a superhero movie with a horror angle. It's also an honest way of coming at the superhero myth because there's something terrifying about the idea of a super-powered alien that would come to Earth." Gunn said.

In the film, Tori's dreams of motherhood come true with the arrival of a mysterious baby boy, after a long struggle with infertility. Though Brandon appears to be everything Tori and her husband Kyle ever wanted, as he nears puberty, he starts to transform into a vicious predator.

"Tori thinks her son is going to bring glory to the world and help us, but that's not necessarily the case. In every way we watch this movie, he is a ghost, he is a demon child, and we treated the movie exactly like that," the filmmaker said.

Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks (Tori Breyer) and David Denman (Kyle Breyer), as the couple and Jackson A. Dunn as Brandon Breyer/Brightburn), the superhero who doesn't harbour love for the human race.

The film is directed by David Yarovesky and written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn.
