Gully Boy fails to make it to Oscars 2020 shortlist; Rangoli Chandel takes a dig at the film

Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy, India's official entry to the Oscars 2020, has not made it to the Best Foreign Language Film category shortlist.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the nominees shortlist across various categories earlier today, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The films to make the final shortlist in the Best Foreign Language film category are The Painted Bird (Czech Republic), Truth And Justice (Estonia), Les Misérables (France), Those Who Remained (Hungary), Honeyland (North Macedonia), Corpus Christi (Poland), Beanpole (Russia), Atlantics (Senegal), Parasite (South Korea) and Pain And Glory (Spain).

Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, is based on the lives of Mumbai rappers Naved Shaikh and Vivian Fernandes, popularly known as Naezy and Divine, respectively.

Reacting to the Oscar snub, Rangoli Chandel, sister and manager of Kangana Ranaut, said, "This film is based on the Hollywood film 8 Mile. It’s not original content like Uri and Manikarnika. Why will Hollywood give an award to a film which is copied from their film?"

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on February 9.
