Kadhalakku Mariyadhai is the Tamil remake of Fazil's own successful Malayalam film, Aniathipravu, which featured Kunchacko Boban and Shalini in the lead roles.
Initially Fazil was keen on casting a debutant in the lead female role, but Shalini insisted that she should also star in the Tamil version.
Shalini was named Mini in both the Tamil and the Malayalam versions. Sreeja Ravi dubbed for her in both versions.
Vijay was only Fazil's second choice for the film's lead.
Fazil initially approached Abbas for lead role but due to mismanagement created by Abbas manager with callsheets, Vijay was selected for the lead role.
The movie went on to be an inspiration for many of the successful love stories of the present day.
Vijay won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor alongside Parthiban in 1997 for Kadhalukku Mariyadhai
Pazhani Bharathi also picked up the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Lyricist for his work in the film.
The film's Hindi remake, titled Doli Saja Ke Rakhna starring Akshaye Khanna and Jyothika in the lead roles, also repeated the same magic of the Tamil version.
The film's soundtrack was composed by Ilaiyaraja and all songs went on to become chartbusters.
The song Oh Baby was sung by Vijay. It's the actor's only song in Raja's composition.
'Ennai Thalatta Varuvala' inspired 2003 film of same name which featured Ajith Kumar in a cameo appearance.
In Aasaiyil Oru Kaditham (1999), Vivek sings 'Ennai Thalatta Varuvala' and imitates Vijay's dance steps.
