Doubt lingers over the release of director Francis Ford Coppola's sci-fi drama Megalopolis in the near future due to a lack of takers from the distribution companies, reports state.

Coppola screened the film to potential distributors and received a mixed-bag response. Even the distributors who liked the film called in "niche" and stepped back concerned about the film's commercial viablity, according to a report by the Hollywood Reporter. The release prospects of Megalopolis got thinner with Coppola keen on having an IMAX release.

Market leaders such as Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount and Netflix attended the screening held on March 28.

The report calls the Megalopolis crisis "a microcosm of a larger issue in Hollywood" of not coming forward to distribute films that are not "commercially safe".

This distribution challenge receives more attention and interest as the even the big names of Coppola and Adam Driver too aren't of help in enabling Megalopolis see the light of the day.

Made in a budget of $ 120 million, Francis Ford Coppola bankrolled the film along with Michael Bederman. Mihai Malaimare Jr is the cinematographer of the film, besides Glen Scantlebury handling the cuts and Osvaldi Golijov composing the music.

The ensemble cast of Megalopolis includes Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman and DB Sweeney.

The film follows Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel) with divided loyalties between her classical-loving father and her lover Caesar (Adam Driver) who is inclined towards a progressive architecture with a desire to rebuild New York as a utopia after the city gets destroyed in a disaster.
