Poland's official submission for Best International Feature Film in the 96th Academy Awards race is the animated feature drama The Peasants. The film comes from DK Welchman, also known as Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. They are the creative duo who made the hand-painted biopic Loving Vincent, which also received an Oscar nomination.

The Welchman duo co-wrote the screenplay of The Peasants adapting it from Władysław Reymont’s eponymous 1905 novel, which won a Nobel Prize. The book is about a resolved young woman who decides to define a path for herself in the 19th century, within the confines of a rather conservative Polish village.

Green Border, Agnieszka Holland’s migrant drama and Woman Of, a drama by Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englerts were in close contention with The Peasants. The Peasants will also compete in the Best Animation Category of the Oscars.

Earlier this month, The Peasants made its premiere as a special presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival. While it is currently headed to the London, Hamptons and Busan festivals, the film also premiered at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, where it won the Special Jury Prize and Audience Award.
