James Gunn addresses "unkind" backlash following Henry Cavill's exit 

A few days before James Gunn had announced that actor Henry Cavill will not be returning as the iconic character Superman, while unveiling his plans for the future of the DC cinematic universe.

Addressing the "uproarious & unkind" "minority of people online", James Gunn said that he along with DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran were aware when they took up the positions as heads. "We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us," he tweeted. James also added that their choices for DCU are based on what they believe are best for the story and their characters. "Perhaps these choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind,” he added.

While Gunn did not refer the non-return of Henry Cavill by name, there was a uproar when the news first broke, especially among fans who expected his return after he appeared in Black Adam's post-credits scene. James also addressed the harassment and wrote about it, "No one loves to be harassed or called names – but, to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions.”

It is also to be noted that the third part of Wonder Woman also faced the axe recently. While many fans speculated that Gal Gadot has been "booted" from DC, Gunn had said as per Deadline, "I'm not sure where you're getting that we 'booted' Gal." It is however not known if Gal is still working with DC or left on her own terms.
