Director Rahul Sankrityan's period epic Ranabaali, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles, has opened to mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Despite the response being neither here nor there, the film has performed really well at the India box office so far. According to data from the box office tracker Sacnilk, it has earned 23.18 crore until now from theatres in India. It is worth noting that the aforementioned Ranabaali box office collection also includes the latest figure from the tracker for Sunday and not the day's final tally.
Written by Pramod Tammineni, the film tells the story of a horseman and warrior (Vijay Deverakonda) who fights against authoritarian British rule in the region of Rayalaseema, after it contributes to an artificial famine. Rice rationing, grain export, and the taxation system at the time turn a drought into an artificial crisis for the public in the region.
Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna have reunited for Ranabaali after working together in films such as Geetha Govindam (2018) and Dear Comrade (2019). It has marked the couple's first film together following their marriage, which took place in February this year. Recently, Rashmika Mandanna revealed through social media that she has taken inspiration from her character in the film and adopted 400 families.
Besides Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, the film also stars Arnold Vosloo of The Mummy fame in an important role. Produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y Ravi Shankar, it has music by Ajay-Atul, cinematography by Jishnu Bhattacharjee and Nirav Shah, production design by Shivam Rao Nagasani, and editing by Karthika Srinivas. On the other hand, Sunil Raju Chinta has supervised the VFX work for the film.
