The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor K Bhagyaraj, who passed away in Chennai at the age of 73 following a cardiac arrest. Bhagyaraj built a legacy that shaped Tamil cinema over the 1980s and 1990s. He also left an imprint on Telugu cinema through adaptations of his work in Tamil. His 1987 film Enga Chinna Rasa was remade into the Telugu film Abbaigaru (1993), and his Sundara Kandam was remade under the identical name Sundarakanda (1992). Both Telugu versions featured actor Venkatesh in the lead role.
Reflecting on the writer-director's passing, Venkatesh wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Bhagyaraj Sir. His work transcended languages and touched the hearts of millions. I feel fortunate to have been a part of films like Sundarakanda and Abbaigaru, which were born from his remarkable storytelling. Indian cinema has lost one of its finest filmmakers. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers.”
On the other hand, Chiranjeevi shared, “Deeply shocked and heartbroken beyond words.” The actor attended the wedding of Kushbu Sunday's daughter Avantika's wedding, also graced by Bhagyaraj. Reflecting on it, Chiranjeevi wrote, “Just the day before yesterday, we were together in Goa at Kush’s wedding, laughing, sharing jokes, and taking pictures.”
About the filmmaker-actor-writer, Chiranjeevi added, “Bhagyaraj garu was full of life and joy. To wake up to the news of his passing this morning is simply unbelievable. A brilliant filmmaker, exceptional screenplay writer, and fine actor, his contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to Poornima ji, Shanthanu and the entire family. May God give them the strength to bear this irreparable loss. Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will be deeply missed.”
