Teja Sajja’s Mirai released on Friday, to a great start at the box office. The much-anticipated action-adventure film is directed by Karthik Gattamneni, who has previous made Eagle. 

Mounted as a massive pan-India spectacle, Mirai collected Rs 12 crore (nett) in all languages combined on day 1 at domestic boxoffice, as per Sacnilk.com. The film’s precise figures in the overseas markets are yet to be ascertained, although the gross collections are expected to be in a range of Rs 5-6 crore. 

In the Hindi belt, while Mirai had a wide release in Mumbai and Delhi, the film also performed well in centres like Lucknow and Pune, registering 14 and 16 per cent occupancies. For its Telugu version release, the film showed excellent attendances in Vizag-Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad. 

The film has largely received positive response from audience, which will likely lead to a decent hold, or possibly some growth, over the weekend. Besides Teja Sajja, Mirai stars Manchu Manoj as the main antagonist, and Ritika Nayak and Shriya Saran in important roles. Other factors like Prabhas’ voiceover cameo in the early portions, and the open-ended climax, which promises Rana Daggubati as the antagonist in sequel, have helped the film’s box office performance too. 

Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 50 crore, Mirai’s OTT rights have been sold for a whopping Rs 40 crore, according to some reports. 

In our review for the film, we noted, “What Mirai ultimately offers is a film caught between ambition and execution. You can sense the filmmakers’ passion, this is definitely not lazy cinema, but passion alone doesn’t make mythology breathe. The film delivers a few thrills, yes, especially as it nears the climax, but it leaves too much unrealised.”
