For Ashok Selvan, the wait between films was never simply about staying away from the screen. After Blue Star, the actor chose not to rush into another project merely to maintain a regular presence in theatres, even as questions about his next film kept coming up. He had earlier said that he did not believe in “marking attendance every Friday” and wanted to wait for a story that felt right.
That patience appears to have culminated in Anbil Avan, a film that places him in a relatively unfamiliar space. The film begins as the story of a newly married couple trying to build a life together before shifting towards action and suspense. The recently released trailer hints at a mysterious threat surrounding the couple, while a behind-the-scenes video has drawn attention to Ashok performing a 70-foot dive for one of the action sequences.
Speaking at the film's pre-release event, Ashok described Anbil Avan as a chance to “reinvent and rediscover” himself, coming roughly two and a half years after his last lead outing. He said he did not want to take up a film simply for visibility and maintained that if his name appears on a poster, he wants to give the project his complete effort.
The actor-producer also opened up about the personal investment behind the project. Ashok said his parents supported the film when its financial requirements increased, even going to the extent of pledging their house. He also credited his nearly decade-long friendship with debutant director R Kaarthikeyan for bringing the film together, saying he believed in the filmmaker's creativity and wanted to give him the platform to tell his story.
Anbil Avan also marks the next production from Ashok and Abinaya Selvam's Happy High Pictures after Oh My Kadavule. The film is written by Vignesh Raja, R Kaarthikeyan and Ashok Selvan, with Govind Vasantha composing the music, Gowtham Rajendran handling cinematography and Peter Hein choreographing the action. It is set to release in theatres on September 25, alongside Dorothy, Meesaya Murukku 2, Lenin Pandiyan and Pulavar.
