Filmmaker Vishnuvardhan has opened up about a difficult professional decision from the early part of his career, one that he says he had never discussed publicly because of its sensitive nature. According to the filmmaker, the episode eventually had a significant bearing on the making of Panjaa, his 2011 Telugu action film starring Pawan Kalyan.

Speaking to Gulte, Vishnuvardhan recalled finding himself in a situation where two major projects had been lined up, forcing him to decide which commitment to honour. He described it as “one of the most difficult situations” he had faced, particularly because both projects involved actors with whom he shared a strong working relationship.

The filmmaker revealed that the project he ultimately had to give up was Billa 2, which he had signed with Ajith. The film had already been announced and its posters released, while Vishnuvardhan had also committed to Pawan Kalyan’s film. With the schedules eventually clashing, he chose to proceed with the latter. “Ethically and professionally, I had committed to Pawan sir first,” he said, adding that he had to let go of Billa 2 despite having the same level of comfort with Ajith that he had with Pawan Kalyan.

The decision was particularly difficult because Panjaa was already taking shape, with producer Shobu Yarlagadda and the team excited about the project. Vishnuvardhan said he was conscious of potentially affecting that momentum but felt he had to honour his earlier professional commitment to Pawan Kalyan. He also recalled that Ajith was “magnanimous enough to understand” his decision to move on from Billa 2.

Looking back, Vishnuvardhan considers the episode one of the more interesting stories behind Panjaa. Walking away from an Ajith project after their successful collaboration on Billa raised the stakes for the filmmaker, but it also allowed him to explore a different creative avenue with Pawan Kalyan. The filmmaker has since continued to move between varied genres and industries, describing his filmography as an attempt to keep exploring himself rather than repeat an earlier success.
