Director Nelson's Jailer 2, starring Rajinikanth in the lead role, is off to a bumper start at the box office. According to data from the box office tracker Sacnilk, the film earned 125.25 crore from theatres worldwide. This makes it the second highest-grossing film starring Rajinikanth in terms of opening day figures. According to reports, the Jailer 2 box office collection is second only to last year's Coolie, which earned around 150 crore on the first day of its release.

The Jailer sequel has also received mixed to positive reviews from critics and audiences. While the majority of them noted writing flaws in the second half of the film, they have hailed the first half, with some of them saying it even surpasses the first part.

Much of the appreciation for Jailer 2's first half has gone to Nelson's integration of new characters into the story, particularly actor Namo Narayana's role Moorthy. Namo Narayana is one of the many new additions to the cast from Jailer for the sequel, the others being Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Hrithik Roshan, SJ Suryah, Vijay Sethupathi, Jackie Shroff, Apeksha Porwal, Mithun Chakraborty, and Hakkim Shah, among others. Meanwhile, the returning cast includes Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu, Vinayakan, Shivarajkumar, Jaffer Sadiq, and Mohanlal.

The story follows Rajinikanth's character former jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, who leads a peaceful life at a supermarket in the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. However, the emergence of an old enemy shatters Muthuvel's peaceful existence, making him revert to his old aggressive measures to protect not just family but also his legacy.

Produced by Kalanithi Maran under his Sun Pictures banner, the sequel to Jailer has technicians such as composer Anirudh, cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan, and editor R Nirmal.
