Around a month after it started production, director Aravinth SB's film Maakaali, starring Ameer in the lead role, has wrapped the first schedule. Mari Selvaraj, who serves as a producer and presenter for the film, announced the news on Tuesday. The film brings Ameer back together with Mari Selvaraj after 2025's Bison Kaalamaadan, although the latter only serves as a producer and presenter here. Written and directed by Aravinth SB, the film also stars Sirai and Modha Rathri fame Anishma Anilkumar and Swasika.

Aravinth served as an assistant director under Mari Selvaraj for films such as Pariyerum Perumal (2018), Karnan (2021), and Maamannan (2023). Maakaali marks Aravinth's directorial debut.

The upcoming film is produced by K Karunamoorthy of Ayangaran International alongside Mari Selvaraj and the Pariyerum Perumal filmmaker's wife Divya through their banner Navvi Studios.

The makers have been keeping plot specifics under wraps until now. They have only dropped a poster featuring Ameer's character navigating a giant animal skeleton.

Maakaali is the first non-Mari Selvaraj directorial venture that the filmmaker himself produces. On the technical front, the upcoming film has composer Justin Prabhakaran, cinematographer Pratheepan Selvaratnam, editor Selva RK, art director Ramu Thangaraj, action choreographer Dhilip Subbarayan.

The makers are yet to announce a release date for the film. Meanwhile, Mari Selvaraj's upcoming directorial ventures include Manjanathi, starring Priyanka Mohan, Kayadu Lohar, and Kathir, among others. Manjanathi marks the first film from the director that will have music by legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja.

Mari Selvaraj is also expected to collaborate with Dhanush for an upcoming film. On the other hand, Ameer's upcoming films also include the long-awaited Maayavalai, which is yet to have its theatrical release. Recently, Maayavalai received a UA 16+ rating from the Central Board of Film Certification.
