Vignesh Shivan on LIK's box-office debacle: An earnest Tamil film that tried to be different

Vignesh Shivan attributed to LIK's failure to the negative reviews and said that was why the collection dipped after a promising opening

Filmmaker Vignesh Shivan has penned a long note about his recent film Love Insurance Kompany (LIK) underperforming at the box office.

He said he has been receiving a lot of positive messages about the film after watching it on OTT platforms. He wrote, "Many people have messaged me saying they missed the film in theatres because of the overwhelming negativity they saw online."

He criticised the reviewers, saying that the reviews were "written to showcase intelligence or superiority, often to more than critique a film - they can discourage audiences from giving it a chance and crush the dreams of ambitious filmmakers."

Adding that he still couldn't come to terms with the box office verdict of LIK and said it hurts to see "how quickly the narrative shifted after a promising opening weekend". He further stated that he felt that LIK was an earnest Tamil film that tried to be "different, complete, and original deserved a little more generosity from its audience".

Vignesh Shivan's post on LIK failure

Recounting the challenges he went through for the film, Vignesh said that not many see the "struggle behind bringing a film like this to life. Making it was difficult, releasing it was even harder, and after overcoming those challenges, seeing it end this way is painful".

Set in 2040, LIK revolves around Suriyan's (SJ Suryah) eponymous app that monitors the love lives of couples and helps them insure their relationships. When his new app feature 'love score' hints at a failure in his relationship with Dheema (Krithi Shetty), Pradeep Ranganathan's Vibe Vassey is determined to prove it wrong and thwart the plans of Suriyan.

Besides Pradeep, Krithi Shetty, and SJ Suryah also star in lead roles in LIK. Gouri Kishan, Yogi Babu, Seeman, Shah Ra, Malavika, Mysskin, Anandaraj, and Sunil Reddy, among others, play supporting roles.
