Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth are coming back together onscreen for the first time after the early 1980s for a film, to be directed by Nelson. The promo for the film, tentatively titled KH x RK, became a big talking point after its recent release, mostly for the reunion of the two big superstars. Composer Anirudh is part of the project, as is cinematographer Rajiv Menon.
The cinematographer talked about the project in a recent interview. Speaking on the I AM with Dhanya Varma show, Rajiv said that Nelson called him on the phone to talk about the project. "He is a beautiful narrator of stories. He tells stories with that much humour and with a poker face. It makes us laugh nonstop even as he remains expressionless," Rajiv said about Nelson the storyteller. The actor-cinematographer added, "After telling the story, he asked me, 'Will you shoot it?' I said, 'Of course!' I just love the idea.'"
Rajiv Menon also said that Nelson asked him to come over for the promo shoot in a week's time and that the filmmaker gave him a brief idea about who the film's hero is. The cinematographer added that it is his first time shooting Rajinikanth and that he has worked with Kamal Haasan before on advertisements. "It is so crazy and zany," Rajiv said about the process of shooting the KH x RK promo. He also appreciated Nelson's idea of making the superstars shed their vanity and egos, the humour in the story and its attempt to connect with the Gen Z.
Rajiv Menon made a surprising revelation about the Kamal Haasan-Rajinikanth film as well. Rajiv said that he received more phone calls for the promo alone than his entire career's work as a cinematographer. He revealed that the film will go on floors in August or September, because both Kamal and Rajinikanth are working on other projects.
