Madhavan's hit film Thambi, directed by actor-politician-filmmaker Seeman, is set for a theatrical re-release, 20 years after its original debut. The makers have now announced that the action drama film will hit screens once again from April 17.
The film revolves around Thambi Velu Thondaiman aka Thambi (Madhavan), an angry young man with a tragic past who wishes to reform society and set the city free from crime and violence. But in order to do so, he has to reform Shankara Pandian (Biju Menon). Upon release in February 2006, the film became a commercially successful venture at the box office, winning praise for Seeman as well as Madhavan, who sported long hair and portrayed a young man from a village for the first time in his career.
Thambi marked a comeback to direction for Seeman after a sabbatical following the release of Veeranadai in 1999.
Besides Madhavan, the film also featured Pooja, Vadivelu, Biju Menon, Manivanna, Vagai Chandrasekhar, Ilavarasu, Raj Kapoor, Manobala and others.
On the technical team, Thambi had music by Vidyasagar and cinematography by Balasubramaniem. Uthraa Productions is handling the distribution for the re-release.
Currently, Madhavan is basking in the success of Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the sequel to Aditya Dhar's film released last year. Up next, Madhavan has the GD Naidu biopic GDN, helmed by Krishnakumar Ramkumar; Adhirshtasaali with Mithran Jawahar and the Netflix series Legacy from director Charukesh Sekar, among others.
