After Khushbu, Sarath Kumar and other prominent actors and politicians registered their angst against former AIADMK Minister C Ve Shanmugam's sexist remarks on actor Nayanthara, Vishal has now released a statement condemning his words.
“I can be an actor, a socially responsible citizen, a voter, or even a viewer, but your speech is clearly targeted at a woman. She is an actress, a homemaker, and a renowned personality in the Indian film industry. There is absolutely no need to seek applause by using such vulgar language. Had you announced a welfare scheme and earned appreciation for it, we would have been happy. But this statement is truly unacceptable,” said Vishal.
He further added, "You have previously served as a Minister under former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. During her tenure, she ensured that women were treated with dignity and felt safe. Please do not stoop to such levels with your words. Do not tarnish your own self-respect. Respecting women is not just a responsibility—it should come naturally from within us."
For the unversed, C Ve Shanmugam had earlier on Tuesday said, "The Chief Minister asks us to state our dreams. I want actress Nayanthara. Will he give her?. Someone will say, 'Marry me with Nayanthara.' Will be fulfil that dream?". He made the statement during a political event in Viluppuram.
The Nadigar Sangam or The South Indian Film Artistes Association headed by Vishal had also strongly criticised his words, calling his comments "derogatory" and demanding an apology. In a detailed statement addressed to Shanmugam, the association said it had been flooded with messages condemning his speech and emphasised that individuals holding public office must be mindful of their words.
Following backlash, C Ve Shanmugam expressed regret over his words and apologised. However, the controversy has continued to stoke debates and discussions on social media.
