Here is an explanation as to why singer Chinmayi has criticised Kamal Haasan for his appreciation of Jnanpith Award winner Vairamuthu

Earlier this Saturday, we reported about poet-lyricist-novelist Vairamuthu being conferred with Jnanpith Award, India's most prestigious award for literature. Soon after the news broke out, opposition has started against the decision to honour the poet-lyricist for his achievements in literature. Leading the protest is singer Chinmayi Sripaada, who became the first major voice to make #MeToo accusations against Vairamuthu in 2018.

Notably, Chinmayi quote tweeted Kamal Haasan's note of appreciation for the poet-lyricist for his achievement. In his post, Kamal noted how Vairamuthu has become the first literary figure in 20 years to win the award, since Jayakanthan. Calling it "a great honour for Tamil Nadu," Kamal described the poet-lyricist as his 'friend' and expressed his pride to congratulate him for the achievement. Kamal also quoted Vairamuthu's poetic words to him, "The sky is a Bodhi tree for me; every day it brings me a message," which he said entered his heart and made him start a friendship with the latter.

In response to Kamal, Chinmayi wrote, "For God’s sake... Men in such power in cinema transitioning to politics completely turning a deaf ear to women who come on record to say they were molested by “his uncle-mentor” must remind women who vote - that men will never be on our side. The weirdest thing - one of the women in his own party publicly named the Poet. End of the day, men WILL stand by their bros, uncles, dads, friends, mentors. Who cares if multiple women were traumatised?"

A user noted the large number of sexual harassment allegations against Vairamuthu from female members of DMK and criticised CM MK Stalin for his appreciation of the poet soon after his achievement. Quote tweeting the user's post, Chinmayi wrote, "This is how law works for those close to politicians."

In a different post, the singer criticised the decision to confer Vairamuthu with the award once again, while pointing out the 2018 allegations against the poet-lyricist. "In 2018, multiple women of different age groups named one Poet - Lyricist as their molester. Today the Gnanpith is awarded to the man, after someone like Sri Jayakantan, whose daughter called Vairamuthu out for presenting a forged, fake letter by Sri Jayakanthan ‘praising’ Vairamuthu."

She also noted how the poet had to turn down the ONV Literary Award in 2021 after backlash over sexual harassment allegations against him at the time. Referring to it, Chinmayi wrote, "A committee from Kerala announced him as for the ONV Kurup award which was later ‘returned’ as voices of justice from their society rose to speak against sullying Sri ONV Kurup’s name."

For the uninitiated, Chinmayi has claimed multiple times that she was banned from singing and dubbing in Tamil cinema for speaking out against Vairamuthu. Alluding to it, she wrote, "I paid a very heavy price - the rest of the women who left their dreams behind weren’t half as lucky as I. The collective voices of the women who named him, were silenced."
