Days after the passing of veteran filmmaker-actor Bharathiraja, the Tamil film fraternity woke up to yet another shocking loss with the demise of veteran director-actor K Bhagyaraj. The filmmaker, who built an illustrious career spanning nearly five decades and earned widespread acclaim for his contributions to Tamil cinema, reportedly passed away after suffering from a cardiac arrest. He was 73.

Interestingly, Bhagyaraj first started out with a small cameo appearance, as a junior artist, in Bharathiraja's debut, 16 Vayathinile (1977) and then briefly appeared in the director's Sigappu Rojakkal (1978) where he also wrote dialogues for it. He served as an assistant director to the late filmmaker in 16 Vayathinile and Kizhakke Pogum Rail (1978) and wrote script for it besides Tik Tik Tik (1981). Later, Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal (1979), in which he starred alongside Sudhakar and Sumathi.

His most notable films include Suvarilladha Chiththirangal (1979), Oru Kai Osai (1980), Mouna Geethangal (1981), Andha 7 Naatkal (1981), Darling, Darling, Darling (1982), Mundhanai Mudichu (1983), Dhavani Kanavugal (1984), Chinna Veedu (1985), Enga Chinna Rasa (1987), and Avasara Police 100 (1990).

Bhagyaraj remains one of Tamil cinema's most distinctive writer-directors, celebrated for his ability to blend humour, family drama, romance and social commentary. His films are known for their clever screenplays, relatable middle-class characters, witty dialogue and emotionally satisfying storytelling, often turning everyday situations into compelling cinema. He also carved a niche by portraying flawed but relatable and endearing protagonists on screen. In his revered career, he has acted in over 75 films. and made over 20 movies.

Earlier this year, during the celebrations of his golden jubilee year in cinema, Bhagyaraj had announced his return to direction. Bhagyaraj last directed Siddhu +2 (2010), starring his son Shanthnu in the lead role. He had taken a long hiatus from helming films since then, although he continues to act in supporting roles in films, the most recent notable outing being Dhanush's Kuberaa (2025). Expressing his decision to get back to direction, he said, "I am still continuing to act. Discussions are on to direct a film and a web series this year. From this year onwards, I want to work with renewed enthusiasm," he said.

Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife and fellow actor Poornima Jayaram and his two children - Saranya Bhagyaraj and Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, who is also an actor in Tamil cinema.

According to reports, his last rites are scheduled to take place tomorrow, Sunday at 1.30 pm at the Besant Nagar crematorium.
