As fans across the world celebrate the 80th birth anniversary of legendary playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, many are revisiting heartwarming moments that showcase the warmth and humility behind the iconic voice. Among them is a memorable encounter with a visually impaired fan from Sri Lanka that continues to move audiences years later.
The fan, Maran, had lost his eyesight in a blast and often spoke about how SP Balasubrahmanyam's songs helped him navigate some of the darkest periods of his life. During a television programme, he shared that meeting the singer was one of his biggest dreams.
Unaware that the surprise had already been arranged, Maran began singing 'Chinna Pura Ondru' and spoke about his admiration for SPB. Moments later, the singer quietly walked onto the stage and stood beside him.
Hearing a familiar voice, Maran appeared confused and tried to identify the person standing next to him. In a playful response, SP Balasubrahmanyam said, "I also sing like SPB." Maran immediately replied that he had thought so, prompting laughter from those present. The singer then embraced his fan, creating an emotional moment that quickly became one of the most cherished clips associated with him.
The surprise did not end there. At Maran's request, SPB sang 'Anjali Anjali' from Duet, dedicating the performance to him. Calling it a "Nanbanjali" (a tribute to a friend), the singer turned what was meant to be a fan interaction into a deeply personal and touching exchange.
The video has resurfaced several times over the years, especially on occasions connected to SPB, reminding fans of the compassion that made him beloved beyond his achievements in music.
SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on September 25, 2020, at the age of 74 following health complications after contracting Covid-19. While his demise left an irreplaceable void in the music world, his legacy continues to thrive through thousands of songs and countless memories shared by fans.
Over the course of his illustrious career, SPB recorded more than 50,000 songs across multiple languages. He also received six National Film Awards and was posthumously honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 2021.
