A welfare association has been established in K Bhagyaraj's name in Puducherry. The legendary actor-director's son Shanthnu Bhagyaraj shared pictures from the association's inauguration ceremony, held on July 19, earlier this Wednesday. Several prominent figures from Puducherry attended the ceremony, including those from arts and entertainment.
The inauguration of the welfare group comes barely a month into Bhagyaraj's passing. The actor-filmmaker passed away on June 27, Saturday. Bhagyaraj experienced a cardiac arrest on the morning of that Saturday and was rushed to a hospital nearby, but he could not be revived.
According to reports, Bhagyaraj does not have any known connection to Puducherry. He was born and raised in Vellankoil, a village adjacent toGobichettipalayam, in Tamil Nadu. His connection to Puducherry stems from the appreciation for his work in the region as an actor-director. His films, especially the titles from the 1980s, are popular among audiences across the state, including those from that decade who grew up in Puducherry.
Bhagyaraj is widely known as the 'King of Screenplays' in Tamil cinema. His films revolve around the middle class, featuring him as vulnerable, flawed and humorous characters. His stories centre on complex relationships, marital dynamics, social issues, and ego clashes. The films explore these themes with a touch of humour and plenty of warmth.
Some of Bhagyaraj's best-known titles are Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu, Indru Poi Naalai Vaa, Mouna Geethangal, Chinna Veedu, Oru Kaidhiyin Diary, and Thooral Ninnu Pochchu. Some of these films feature Bhagyaraj as the quintessential everyman.
Bhagyaraj's final rites took place on June 28 with full state honours, which Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced in recognition of the filmmaker-actor's impact on Tamil cinema and culture. A gun salute took place during the ceremony.
