Even as Vijay's much-awaited swansong Jana Nayagan gears up for its July 24 release in India after months of certification hurdles, audiences in the United Kingdom will get to watch a version of the film without any censor cuts.
UK distributor Ahimsa Entertainment announced that the H Vinoth directorial has been classified 15+ in the country and will be screened in its original form. Sharing the update on X, the distributor wrote, "THE HONOURABLE CHIEF MINISTER OF TAMIL NADU, C JOSEPH VIJAY", and added that Jana Nayagan would arrive in UK cinemas on July 24 "uncut, 15-rated," with "all the action, all the mass, all the Thalapathy craze, exactly as it was meant to be seen."
The announcement quickly caught the attention of fans, particularly the emphasis on the film being "uncut" and presented "exactly as it was meant to be seen". Several users celebrated the update online, while others expressed hope that the unaltered version would eventually be made available on streaming platforms.
The development comes days after KVN Productions confirmed that the film had been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India with an A certificate. Sharing the news on social media, the production banner wrote, "See you soon in theatres nanba & nanbis. #JanaNayaganCensoredA." The makers had earlier maintained before the court that they were verbally assured of receiving a UA 16+ certificate.
Originally slated for a January release ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Jana Nayagan was pushed indefinitely after objections were raised during the certification process. A complaint from a member of the examining committee resulted in the film being referred to the revising committee, leading to a prolonged delay. Despite approaching the courts, the makers had to wait nearly seven months before the film was finally certified for release.
Also featuring Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde, Jana Nayagan is widely believed to be inspired by Anil Ravipudi's Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari. As this marks Vijay's first release after assuming office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, reports suggest the opening title card will identify him as "The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay," replacing the familiar "Thalapathy Vijay" credit.
