Filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj, in a recent press meet held at Chennai, shared why the re-censoring bid for Rajinikanth starrer Coolie was not fruitful and why the A certificate for the film is better in retrospect.
The director shared that the cut suggestions given to the film would have spoiled its essence. "During the initial censoring, we were given an A certificate without cuts, but were told that a U/A certification would necessitate 35 cuts. I felt that would be an injustice to our film. Upon release, when we approached the court for a re-censoring, we were again asked to make 35 cuts for a U/A certificate, so we didn't proceed with the procedure. In retrospect, the A certification was better; it is better to have a complete film with an A certificate than a U/A certificate for an incomplete film."
Elaborating that an A certificate felt natural for Coolie, he said, "The theme and core plot of Coolie, of cremating a corpse, was not for all sections to watch. So it was natural Coolie to get an A certificate."
On Coolie's polarised reviews, Lokesh simply said he will make amends on the genuine errors based on the healthy criticisms in his upcoming films and did not want to divulge much on the box office collection. "Despite all the criticisms, Coolie had a successful run of 35 days in Tamil Nadu theatres so I am thankful for the love. My producer, Sun Pictures, too, said they have earned a profit, and I don't want to discuss any more about the collections."
On the workfront, Lokesh Kanagaraj will be seen headlining Arun Matheswaran's DC, opposite Wamiqa Gabbi, and will helm Allu Arjun's film, produced by Mythri Movie Makers.
