On Sunday, film distribution company Sakthi Film Factory took to X to announce that Vijay Sethupathi's 2013 film, Soodhu Kavvum, is all set to re-release in theatres after 13 years on February 20. The black comedy crime film, which marked the directorial debut of Nalan Kumarasamy, hit theatres on May 1, 2013, and became both a critical and a commercial success.

Soodhu Kavvum also stars Sanchita Shetty, Karunakaran, Bobby Simha, Ramesh Thilak and Ashok Selvan in key roles, with Yog Japee, Aruldoss, M. S. Bhaskar and Radha Ravi playing supporting characters. In the film, Das (Vijay Sethupathi) kidnaps Arumai (Karunakaran), the son of a politician who's actually planning his own kidnap to swindle money from his father. Things get messy when a maverick cop is assigned to the case.

The film also marked the feature debut for Ashok Selvan and the first prominent role for Ramesh Thilak. On the technical front, the film had music composed by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography by Dinesh B Krishnan and editing by Leo John Paul. Backed by CV Kumar of Thirukumaran Entertainments, Soodhu Kavvum was remade in Telugu as Gaddam Gang (2015) and in Urdu as the Pakistani film Chupan Chupai (2018).

The film's sequel, Soodhu Kavvum 2, hit theatres last year with Shiva in the lead but opened to underwhelming reviews. The film was helmed by SJ Arjun.

Meanwhile, Nalan recently had the release of his third full-fledged feature film, Vaa Vaathiyaar, starring Karthi, which opened to mixed reviews. Vijay Sethupathi, on the other hand, was last seen in Gandhi Talks, a silent film co-starring Aditi Rao Hydari and Arvind Swami. He has Train, Arasan, Jailer 2, and Slum Dog: 33 Temple Road in various stages of production.
