Actor-filmmaker T Rajendar's 1983 film Uyirullavarai Usha is releasing in theatres again this Friday, just in time for Valentine's Day weekend. The romantic action film stars director Rajendar himself alongside Saritha, Nalini, Ganga, and Radha Ravi, among others. In an exclusive conversation, the actor-director spoke to CE about the title, what it was like to produce the film back in the day and more.
During his conversation with CE, T Rajendar revealed that he chose the title Uyirullavarai Usha as a way of paying tribute to his wife Usha, also an actor. He got married to her a year before the film's release. Interestingly, the filmmaker revealed that many questioned his decision to use the said title. "They said, 'You are getting married to a woman named Usha. How could you use that as the title?' I told them, 'So what?' I would not let go of what I like and would not touch what I dislike. I liked the title and used it," Rajendar explained.
The filmmaker also said that the 1983 film was a crucial project for him because he had to produce it on his own without any external support. He revealed that he got married without any fuss and without a feast or a stage, with only the bare minimum and with the presence only some of his friends. "If it was an arranged marriage, your relatives would come, but I had no such support. I just had God's support. If the film had not become a hit, people would have blamed it on the woman who entered my life and it would have ruined her life."
Fortunately for him, the film became a big hit at the box office. In the interview, the filmmaker-actor revealed that while the film achieved the 'Silver Jubilee' status in Tamil Nadu, it earned the 'Golden Jubilee' status in Andhra Pradesh.
