Ilaiyaraaja shares update on his second symphony

Earlier last year, emminent composer-singer Ilaiyaraaja became the first Indian ever to present a Western classical symphony in London, has shared an update regarding his second symphony. Unveiling a photo of him penning notes for the musical, Ilaiyaraaja said February 3 had marked the completion of five years since he moved into his new studio and works for the second symphony has "almost completed."

Ilaiyaraaja had announced that he was to begin to write his second symphony on October 21 last year. Following his performance in Dubai back then, he thanked audiences and fans for their appreciation for his symphony. The noted musician had shared a video message on X where he disclosed that he intended to begin work on his next symphony after observing his mother's death anniversary.

For the uninitiated, Ilaiyaraaja made history as the first Asian as well as Indian to present a Western classical symphony titled Valiant (Symphony No. 1), performed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra in London on March 8 to 9, 2025 at the age of 82. The four-movement masterpiece, featuring over 80 musicians and conducted by Mikel Toms, marked a milestone in global music. The feat won him worldwide recognition, with Tamil Nadu CM describing it as a "crown jewel" of his career. The composer, during the time, said he would be performing the symphony in 13 countries.

On the film front, the composer had scored for Netflix's much-anticipated series Legacy, which stars an ensemble cast including Madhavan, Nimisha Sajayan, Gautham Ram Karthik, Gulshan Deviah, Abhishek Banerjee, Swaswika, Kaali Venkat and others in leading roles.
