Early on Wednesday, the makers of Dhanush's upcoming film D55 announced that Malayalam actor Mammotty has joined the film, marking his first return to Tamil cinema after the 2019 film Peranbu.

After joining the film, Mammootty wrote on his X handle that he is elated and excited to be a part of this journey, to which Dhanush responded saying, "An absolute honour sir".

Mammootty joins the already announced cast of Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela. While Sreeleela is collaborating with Dhanush for the first time, Sai Pallavi is reuniting with Dhanush after Maari 2 (2018). Sai Pallavi is joining Rajkumar Periasamy back-to-back in D55, after Amaran.

D55 will be backed by Dhanush's Wunderbar Films, in association with RTake Studios. The film was earlier set to be produced by Anbuchezhiyan and Sushmita Anbuchezhiyan under their Gopuram Films banner before the change took place.

Composer Sai Abhyankkar has joined the technical crew, with the rest of the crew yet to be announced.
