Actor-turned-chief minister Vijay has another entry in the 300-crore club. Earlier this Tuesday, those involved in the promotions of Jana Nayagan revealed that the film, directed by H Vinoth, has grossed more than 300 crore from theatres worldwide. Actor Priyamani, who plays a role in the film alongside Mamitha Baiju and Pooja Hegde, shared a poster featuring the said Jana Nayagan box office collection. The box office tracker Sacnilk, too, confirmed the figure.
Remarkably, the film's achievement comes only 12 days into its release and despite the negative reviews it received from critics and even a section of the audience. The collection is partly attributable to the fact that it was announced as Vijay's final film before his retirement from acting for a full-time career in politics. It underscores Vijay's ability to pull in crowds even in a day and age where audiences rely on reviews before deciding on whether or not to watch latest theatrical releases.
According to Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan is only the third film to gross more than 300 crore at the global box office. Reportedly, Leo (2023) still tops the list of the highest-grossing Vijay films to date, followed by The Greatest of All Time. Vijay's final film is expected to gross more than Suriya's Karuppu and become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 soon. Industry insiders expect it to cross the overall global box office collection of Karuppu, which stands at around 310 crore, according to Sacnilk data.
The film's humongous box office success shows that it has lived up to producer Venkat K Narayana's faith in Vijay's ability to bring in a large number of audiences with his star power. In an interview before the film's release with NDTV, the KVN Productions owner said that audiences in Tamil Nadu view Vijay as one of their own and watch his films without considering reviews.
