Kamal Haasan and Sridevi's critically-acclaimed 1982 romantic drama Moondram Pirai has been digitally restored and is all set to premiere on OTT soon after 44 years. Written and directed by Balu Mahendra, who also served as the film's cinematographer, the film remains an iconic landmark in the actors' filmography and continues to be remembered for its rooted and emotional storyline.
Produced by TG Thyagarajan and G Saravanan under the Sathya Jyothi Films banner, the film features music by Ilaiyaraaja and had lyrics by Kannadasan, Vairamuthu and Gangai Amaran. Interestingly, it also featured the last song written by Kannadasan to be recorded before his death in 1981.
Moondram Pirai follows Bhagyalaksmi/Viji (Sridevi) who suffers from retrograde amnesia. Srinivas aka Cheenu (Kamal), a school teacher rescues her and protects her from doing sex work. He makes her stay at his place and the two develop a deep relationship, with Cheenu falling in love with her. The emotional story shows how she recovers her memory with the help of Kamal's character.
Moondram Pirai received widespread critical acclaim and several prestigious awards upon its release, including two National Film Awards: Best Actor for Kamal Haasan, marking his first National Award, and Best Cinematography for Balu Mahendra. It also earned multiple Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and went on to have a successful theatrical run for one entire year across India. Its Hindi remake Sadma (1983) too received massive praise.
Decades after its release, the film continues to be remembered as an evergreen classic and a benchmark of performance-driven storytelling and its digitally restored premiere offers audiences an opportunity to revisit this timeless masterpiece in renewed visual quality.
The digitally remastered version of Moondram Pirai is set to premiere on Prime Video from May 1.
