Director Vignesh Raja is awaiting the April 30 release of his sophomore directorial venture, Kara, starring Dhanush in the lead role. Ahead of the film's release, Vignesh revealed that he planned a racing film, only to abandon it for a specific reason.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Vignesh Raja said that he had some spare time before starting production on Kara, since Dhanush was busy shooting for his other film Tere Ishk Mein, directed by Anand L Rai and co-starring Kriti Sanon. "So we thought about a different project. We developed a script on racing, and it was something set in Irungattukottai. It was about how a guy who moves the lawn goes on to become a racer," Vignesh said.

The filmmaker added that he eventually abandoned the project idea, something in the vein of films such as Rush and Ford vs Ferrari, following the release of F1, starring Brad Pitt.

He added that he and his team even went to Irungattukottai as part of the abandoned film. "Then, F1 happened. We went to the theatres and watched the film. It was a jaw-dropping experience," the filmmaker said about his experience watching the Formula One racing film, directed by Joseph Kosinski of Top Gun: Maverick fame. Vignesh also revealed that he dropped the idea of the film, thinking that they could not match the scale of the Hollywood film. "We told ourselves, 'Let us push that away. Let us not even attempt going there.'"

Vignesh said that these things happen in a creative profession such as filmmaking. He said that similar films release sometimes back-to-back, making it impossible to copy from each other's works.

Vignesh made his directorial debut with the whodunnit Por Thozhil, starring Sarath Kumar and Ashok Selvan.
