Late on Sunday, April 19, a firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti, Virudhunagar, exploded. Around 50 workers were present inside, at the time of the explosion. Around 18 workers are feared dead, with some workers injured.
Addressing the situation, and condoling the victims, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president and actor-politician Vijay, has released a statement on X. "Upon learning of the tragic explosion at a fireworks factory in Kattanarpatti near Virudhunagar, which claimed the lives of more than 20 people, I am deeply saddened. I extend my heartfelt condolences to their families."
"I earnestly wish for a swift and complete recovery for those who sustained severe injuries and are undergoing treatment. I pray to the divine for the souls of the departed to attain eternal peace," added Vijay.
He concluded by writing, "As soon as a true people's government is established under the leadership of the TVK, appropriate measures will be taken to safeguard the welfare of fireworks industry workers."
According to the police, the explosion happened at 3 pm on April 19, due to a chemical reaction, while the workers were conducting their routine manufacturing related processes. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased, and has announced rescue and support operations.
