With Suriya's Karuppu slated for release in theatres on May 14 after a long wait, the makers have announced that the film has been titled Veerabhadrudu in Telugu. Directed by RJ Balaji, the action film is being highly awaited by fans and audiences, with the recent move of giving a separate title for the Telugu audiences, being welcomed by social media users.
Karuppu was initially announced to release in January 2026, coinciding with the Pongal festival, but was later postponed. The teaser for the film revealed that Suriya will play a lawyer called Saravanan, a nod to his original name. Released in July last year, it presented Suriya in a 'mass' avatar. Set in a rural backdrop, he is looked at as a saviour, an almost deity-like who delivers justice to commonfolk.
The film features Trisha as the female lead, reuniting her with her Aaru (2005) co-star Suriya. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, acclaimed Malayalam actor Indrans, Sshivada, Lubber Pandhu fame Swasika, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi. The director is also playing a cameo role in the film.
In a recent interview, RJ Balaji said, "As a filmmaker, Karuppu is 15 times bigger in scale than my previous projects like Mookuthi Amman (2020), Veetla Vishesham (2022). I was not appointed for such a majestic project, but I made myself prepared for it."
He also shared that Karuppu is a compelling commercial film that will resonate with audiences of all ages. "Much like other films such as Muthu (1995), Padayappa (1999), and Ghilli (2004), Karuppu too falls under the feel-good category. If you have seen Tamil films in the last decade, heroes take roles either like a rowdy, a don, or a cop. It's like there are no other professions. The heroes that I grew up watching were either a milkman, a tea shop owner, a driver or a teacher doing everyday jobs. Karuppu will have the elements of such movies we admired in the past, but with a strong social message, because I feel that there has to be some key takeaway from a film,” he added.
Music for Karuppu is composed by Sai Abhyankkar, with lyrics by Vishnu Edavan, Asal Kolaar, Arun Srinivasan. Cinematographer GK Vishnu, editor R Kalaivanan, production designer Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreographers Anbariv and Vikram Mor, round out the crew of Karuppu.
Karuppu is produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabu under their Dream Warrior Pictures banner. Aravendaraj Baskaran is serving as the executive producer on the film. The film's satellite rights have been bagged by Zee Tamil.
