Condolence messages poured in across party lines and from actors

Barely a day after the tragic deaths of over 35 people at his election campaign in Karur, actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has sought permission from the Tamil Nadu police to revisit the district to meet the families of the deceased and hand them the aid.

Disaster struck on Saturday night in Karur's Velusamypuram as at least 39 people, including eight children, were killed in a stampede and several others were injured during the TVK campaign, scheduled for every Saturday covering several assembly segments. The political slugfest ensued minutes after reports surfaced of the stampede. While some sections criticised Vijay's lack of planning and irresponsibility, TVK supporters slammed the ruling DMK government for not allotting the campaign site of their choice and not providing proper protection.

Condolence messages poured in across party lines and from actors.

The death toll is not expected to increase as reports say that the present toll comprises just those people who were brought dead, and the others could be revived.

While the state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased, Vijay announced that his party will provide a solatium of Rs 20 lakh to the bereaved families and Rs 2 lakh to the injured.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has formed a one-person fact-finding committee headed by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. Chief Minister Stalin said he doesn't wish to give the incident a political colour, and the action would be taken as suggested by the committee.
