Housemates director Rajavel: We expected a bigger success in theatres

The sci-fi horror had a lukewarm response in theatres despite being received with positive reviews from critics

Director Rajavel, who recently made Housemates, starring Darshan and Kaali Venkat, expressed his disappointment on the film not facing better success during its theatrical release on July 30. The film was backed by Sivakarthikeyan under his Sivakarthikeyan productions banner.

The sci-fi horror had a lukewarm response in theatres despite being received with positive reviews from critics, but found larger audiences and wider success upon its arrival on OTT recently.

On Sunday, Rajavel said he was overwhelmed with gratitude seeing the response for the film on OTT. "We were not able to celebrate when Housemates released in theatres, but today me and my team will celebrate this as a big success," he wrote.

Hours later, he elaborated on his stance, stating that he expected better response in theatres although the film has been received well on OTT. "In our industry a film's success is measured only by the amount it collects in theatres, so for debut directors like me this success in OTT may be personally very happy to see, but still theatrical success is much more different as it will lift our confidence level up and support myself and my team to do much more films like this," he said, requesting the Tamil audiences to watch and support all films in theatres. "Because supporting only after OTT release will never do any good for technicians like us," he added.

Apart from Kaali Venkat and Darshan, Housemates also stars Aarsha Baiju, Vinothini Vaidyanathan, Dheena and Abdool Lee.

Along with Sivakarthikeyan, S Vijayaprakash also produced the film. Playsmith Studios and South Studios had backed the film.
