After its theatrical release on May, director V Justin Prabhu's Vembu, starring Harikrishnan and Sheela Rajkumar, will begin streaming on Aha OTT platform from Friday.
The film opened to mixed to negative reviews upon release on May 23. While the performances and cinematography were praised, the film was criticised for promoting regressive ideas. An excerpt from the CE review reads, "Vembu wants to empower women; it wishes for a better world for them, but in the end, it shows the struggle of a woman’s family life rather than her career. It wants to be technically strong, but is flawed to a fault. It tries to be a film with a message for the audience but is let down by its story. With so many letdowns, the ambitions of the Vembu are pushed back by its flawed tropes."
Vembu marked the debut of director Justin and also the maiden collaboration between both the leads. Apart from Hari and Sheela, the film also starred Janaki, Marimuthu and Jaya Rao in supporting characters.
Produced by Golden Shures and S Vijaya Lakshmi under Manjal Cinemas, Vembu's technical crew includes cinematographer A Kumaran, music composer Manikandan Murali, editor KJ Venkat Ramanan, and art director Gopi Karunanithi.
